Nationwide Building Society has launched a new and innovative way for children to brush up on their times tables. Teaming up with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) the free online 'Beatbox Resource', available as one of the interactive resources from Nationwide Education, allows children to learn their times tables with a range of different sounds to make learning more engaging and accessible.
A range of sounds are available from beatboxing to clapping, to the music of instruments like the oboe, violin, flute and even the bongos. Learners can then choose the combination of sounds they find most helpful when learning their times tables.
Stephen Uden, Head of Citizenship at Nationwide commented "This resource is not only great fun, providing a really interesting way to learn times tables, but also supports Nationwide's commitment to developing a more creative approach to numeracy by working to ensure that everyday number skills are presented in an accessible way.
"People with poor number skills are twice as likely to be unemployed1, and more likely to be in mortgage arrears2. As a mutual with roots in the community we want to help members, the wider public and future generations with their number skills to equip them to make informed financial decisions."
Andy Baker, BSO Community Musician said "Music and maths go hand in hand, providing this new education resource has resulted in an exciting interactive and enjoyable way to learn time tables for all. We hope that Beatbox Tables will help the wider community, equipping them with vital numeracy skills and see future generations of mathematicians and musicians!"
"The BSO's Education and Participation projects are part of a wider programme of community work promoting musical education & cultural vitality. The BSO is committed to ensuring that music is accessible to everyone in the community irrespective of circumstance."
The 'Beatbox Resource' is available free on the Nationwide Education website and forms part of a wide range of practical resources for teachers, parents and children to assist in financial education, sustainability, safety and employability skills. Nationwide Education currently facilitates more than 50,000 resource downloads a month, helping people of all ages develop these important everyday life skills.
