Joe Garner

Chief Executive 

Joe Garner

Joe joined Nationwide in April 2016 from BT Group where he was Chief Executive of Openreach, a position he held from early 2014.

Prior to this Joe was a director of HSBC Bank PLC and Head of HSBC in the UK, roles which included responsibility for all of HSBC's retail and commercial banking business, including Marks and Spencer Bank, First Direct and The John Lewis Partnership Card. He has also held senior positions at Dixons Stores Group and spent the early part of his career at Procter and Gamble.

In May 2016 Joe was appointed as a member of the FCA's Practitioner Panel. Joe was previously appointed to the FSA Practitioner Panel in 2011 and was Chairman between 2012 and 2013. Joe was also a Non-Executive Director of the Financial Ombudsman Service from 2007-2010. He is currently Chairman of the British Triathlon Foundation Trust.

Tony Prestedge

Tony Prestedge

Tony has over 20 years’ experience in financial services. Before joining Nationwide he was Managing Director Home Finance for Barclays PLC and a member of the Retail Banking Executive Committee, prior to which he was Retail Support and Operations Director and Head of UK Banking Change and Transformation.

Since the beginning of 2017 Tony has been Leader of Relationships and Distribution, accountable for bringing together all areas of the business that interact and connect Nationwide to its 15 million members. Tony is also accountable for the Society’s digital innovation and strategy and leads on regulated advice channels where he is responsible for the distribution of mortgages and investment products.

Tony is a Director of a number of the Society’s subsidiaries, Board member of the BITC Gender Diversity organisation, Opportunity Now, and a Trustee of the Nationwide Foundation.

Mark Rennison

Mark Rennison

Prior to joining Nationwide, Mark was a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He joined the firm in 1981 and specialised in financial services with a specific focus on retail and corporate banking. He also worked extensively with group treasury operations and leasing & asset finance businesses. He was admitted to the partnership of the firm in 1995.

Mark joined Nationwide in February 2007. He is currently the Chief Finance Officer, leading the Finance and Efficiency community, which is accountable for supply chain management, financial planning, stress testing, capital management, financial reporting, financial controls and operations, treasury, efficiency and cost management.

Sara Bennison

Chief Marketing Officer

Sara Bennision

Sara was appointed as Chief Marketing Officer in March 2016 and leads the Marketing and Engagement Community. Her responsibilities span brand, advertising, market research, insight, marketing, internal communications and social investment.

Previously Sara was CMO at Barclays Personal and Corporate Bank and had held senior roles at BT and a number of major advertising agencies in the UK and Asia.

Sara takes an active role in the advertising industry. She is Vice President of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers, a member of the Industry Advisory Panel for the Advertising Standards Authority and Treasurer of the Front Foot Initiative for the Advertising Association. She is also a Fellow of the Marketing Society and, in 2016, was recognised as Financial Services Marketer of the Year by the Financial Services Forum.

Chris Rhodes

Chief Products and Propositions Officer

Chris Rhodes

Chris joined Nationwide in April 2009 from Abbey Santander.

Chris is currently Leader of Product and Proposition with responsibilities including Nationwide’s product range, its existing commercial activities, consumer finance, customer experience and customer strategy.

Chris has spent over 25 years working in the financial services sector and his previous positions include deputy managing director of Girobank and retail operations director of Alliance and Leicester. In 2003 he was appointed as managing director retail banking for the entire Alliance and Leicester Group. In 2007 Chris moved to become group finance director, a role he held until the merger with Santander in 2008.

Debra Bailey

Debra Bailey

Debra has been with Nationwide since 2012, and was appointed Leader of Operations and Delivery in December 2016.

The majority of Debra’s career has been working in financial services, holding a number of senior roles within Technology and Operations across both Barclays and Woolwich plc. Debra has had a range of experience in strategic, operational and change roles having worked in Retail, Public Sector, Financial Services and Telecommunications.

At Nationwide Debra is responsible for: Information Security and Cyber Risk, Physical Security, Product Operations, IT Development, Logical Security, Operational Resilience and Risk Control, IT Operations, IT Strategy and Architecture.

Debra is also non-executive director of the Main Board and Audit Committee of the Business Services Authority, founder member of the Technology Business Management Board, and a member of the Microsoft Services Executive Board.

Richard Beck

Richard Beck

Richard spent his early career at HSBC, working in five countries over 15 years and culminating as a Group GM and Global Communications Director through the financial crisis.

In 2011 he left to establish the UK arm of strategic advisory consultancy, Teneo, building this to a 30-person, multi-million dollar business in less than four years. Clients included CEOs and Chairmen of several of the world's largest brands and leading FTSE and Fortune 100 companies.

Richard joined Nationwide Building Society in 2016 as Leader of Strategic Planning and External Relations. As a member of ExCo, he is responsible for helping shape the society's strategic direction and for key stakeholder engagement, including media outreach, public affairs and Nationwide's narrative.

Graeme Hughes

Director of Intermediaries, Branches and Regulated Advice

Graeme Hughes

Graeme joined Nationwide in 1984.  Having spent a lot of his career in the branch network, from Branch Manager to his current position of Distribution Director, and previously as Director of HR and Corporate Affairs, Graeme now leads a large team across branches and Nationwide Now including all regulated advisers which serves Nationwide's members as well as Intermediary clients.

Graeme is a member of the Executive Committee and is on the Board of Nationwide’s Charitable Foundation, as well as being on the Business in the Community Race Equality Board.

Robert Gardner

Chief Economist

Robert Gardner

Robert and his team provide economic analysis and advice to key decision makers in Nationwide. The team is focused on developments in the UK economy, with a particular emphasis on the mortgage and savings markets.

As the external spokesperson for the Nationwide House Price Index, Robert is frequently quoted in the media and often appears on Radio and TV and speaks at a range of internal and external events.

Prior to joining Nationwide, Robert was the Head of Macroeconomics at RBS, where his team was responsible for providing economic analysis and forecasts for the UK, US and major Eurozone economies. During his career he also worked for Barclays, where he was responsible for analysis of emerging markets in Asia and Latin America. He has also worked as an economic adviser at HM Treasury.

Alan Oliver

Head of External Affairs

Alan Oliver

Alan oversees Nationwide’s Policy & Public Affairs and Media Relations teams. He is responsible for formulating the organisation’s response to emerging market and regulatory issues, as well as engaging with the media to ensure they understand Nationwide’s approach and rationale towards its customers and business operations.

He has held this role since 2005, and prior to this has had a long and varied career with the Society, covering a broad range of areas including the retail network, finance, internal communications and corporate responsibility.
