This page sets out what payments we can make before a grant of representation is obtained and also what we require in order to close accounts. There are links to the relevant forms, which you can print off and use as appropriate. If the deceased customer held joint accounts, these will be transferred into the remaining account holder’s name.

Payments before closure of the account

Payments before closure of the account

Prior to a Grant of Representation being obtained, we can release funds for the payment of the funeral costs, probate court fees and inheritance tax. To request payment of any of these items, please see below for our requirements.

Funeral expenses
We require a copy of the funeral invoice. The cheque will be made payable to the funeral directors.

Probate Court fees
We require our Request for funds to cover fees form (IF21) signed by the Personal Representative. The cheque will be made payable to HM Courts and Tribunals Service.

Inheritance Tax
We require either our Request for funds to cover fees form (IF21) signed by the Personal Representative or the IHT423 form. We do not fully participate in the IHT423 scheme so cannot make payment electronically and a cheque will be sent to you payable to HM Revenue & Customs.

Closure of deceased customers' accounts

Closure of deceased customers' accounts

Where the balance of the deceased's sole accounts with Nationwide is less than £30,000 and no Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration are being applied for, the accounts may be closed upon completion of the Bereavement Request to close accounts form. You can also obtain this form from your local Nationwide branch.

For balances above £30,000 we will require a Grant of Representation together with a closure form signed by the Personal Representative in order to close the account.
